Mandatory Certifications

• Many steel products require BIS certification for domestic sales and imports (e.g., TMT rebars IS 1786, structural steel IS 2062, stainless steel IS 6911).

• Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme (FMCS):

  • Overseas mills exporting to India must get BIS license.

• Ongoing Notifications:

  • BIS frequently issues orders adding new steel grades/products under mandatory certification.

  • Example: BIS made certification mandatory for stainless steel sheets, galvanized steel, etc.
